The 2020 Toyota Corolla enters 2020 with exciting new features, including a hybrid model. It builds on decades of popularity with better efficiency, technology and more. However, it is important to compare the Corolla against the competition to help illustrate the ingenuity and quality of the model line. Here, we compare it to the 2020 Mazda3.
The Corolla four-door family offers two primary models, the sedan and hatchback, with a total of ten trim levels. The Mazda3 includes just one four-door model in three trim levels. The Corolla provides more choices to meet your driving needs.
The 2020 Toyota Corolla's advanced engines save more at the pump
The Corolla offers three engines that win - by far - in fuel efficiency. The L, LE, and XLE receive the new 1.8L Valvematic four-cylinder engine that boosts horsepower to 139. The L and LE trims, with a continuously variable transmission, achieve a fuel consumption rating of 7.9/6.1/ L/100 km (city/highway). The Mazda3's entry 2.0L engine has a few more horses than the Corolla's 1.8L, but this greatly affects fuel economy at 8.7/6.6 L/100 km.
The Corolla’s 2.0L four-cylinder Dynamic Force Engine (DFE) features 169 horsepower. The DFE uses intelligent valve timing to increase power and efficiency. The CVT-equipped Corolla SE and XSE achieve a rating of or close to 7.6/5.8 L/100 km (city/highway), and the Hatchback CVT attains 7.5/5.8. The Mazda3's most powerful engine is a 2.5L four-cylinder with 186-horsepower, but it also comes at a great fuel efficiency cost - 9.0/6.8 L/100 km.
The 2020 Toyota Corolla Hybrid changes the game
So far, the Corolla edges out the Mazda 3 in fuel efficiency, but the Corolla Hybrid knocks it out of the park. This model is one of the most efficient compact hybrids on the road, earning a fuel efficiency rating of 4.4/4.5 L/100 km (city/highway). This is over twice as efficient on the highway as the Mazda3's 2.5L in the city, and nearly twice more than the Mazda3's 2.0L.
The Corolla also offers advantages in passenger comfort, including 160 mm of additional leg room and a 33 mm advantage in rear shoulder room. Not to mention more technology and the Toyota reliability that is clearly superior than any other sedan on the market.
