The latest Highlander is better than ever. Competitors find it difficult to outperform the power, efficiency, passenger comfort and technology it offers. Here we compare the latest Highlander to the 2021 Mazda CX-9.
The 2021 Toyota Highlander is more efficient
The Highlander range includes two engines which deliver power and efficiency. First, a 3.5-liter six-cylinder is standard in five all-gasoline models. It generates an ample output of 295 horsepower and a torque of 263 lb-ft. The second option, available on three hybrid models, is a four-cylinder engine mated to an electric motor that produces 243 horsepower.
The CX-9 offers a single engine, a 2.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder that can produce up to 250 horsepower on 93-octane gasoline and 227 horsepower with a more common 87 octane.
The Highlander's hybrid engine is the more efficient of the two lines, with a fuel consumption rating of 6.8 L/100 km in the city and 6.6 L/100 km on the highway. That's beating the CX-9's thirsty engine, which hits 11.6/9.1 L/100 km under the same conditions.
The Highlander also features an 8-speed automatic transmission for improved performance and efficient operation. The CX-9 only offers a six-speed automatic transmission.
The 2021 Toyota Highlander is more versatile
The Highlander isn't all about power and efficiency. The key to a good SUV is versatility, and the Highlander sure has it.
With up to 2,387 liters of cargo space behind the front seats, the Highlander exceeds the CX-9's capacity by 371 liters, a difference that is greater than the capacity of some sedan trunks. The possibilities of passenger and load combinations are numerous, with different combinations of folding seats and benches.
Above all, the Highlander offers a much higher level of individual comfort. The front and second rows offer significantly more head, leg and shoulder room than the CX-9. Even the third row of the Highlander offers more head and shoulder room. The Highlander is designed to adapt as your family grows.
