The compact SUV segment is absolutely packed with impressive offerings that give buyers space, versatility, performance, safety, and the latest technology. It’s the most popular segment in Canada because it offers vehicles that meet just about every need, and there isn’t a bad model in the segment. That makes it even more telling that the 2021 Toyota RAV4 is not only the best-seller in the segment, but also the best-selling non-truck vehicle in Canada.
There are numerous reasons why the 2021 Toyota RAV4 stands out in its segment, and why it beats the CR-V in terms of popularity. Its standard engine is a 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine that develops 203 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque. In the front-wheel drive configuration, it has a fuel consumption of 8.8 L/100 km in the city and 6.7 L/100 km on the highway. Imagine, a vehicle this spacious that averages the same fuel economy as a midsize sedan. That’s what you get in the RAV4 and although the CR-V is also efficient, it can’t match the RAV4.
The 2021 Honda CR-V is powered by a 1.5-litre four-cylinder engine that develops only 190 horsepower and 179 lb-ft of torque. Fuel consumption with front-wheel drive models is higher than RAV4 on the highway, at 7.0 litres/100 km.
The RAV4 Trail model is ideal for those who want to tow, with a capacity of 3,500 lb. On the Honda CR-V side, towing capacity is limited to 680 kg. Even the RAV4 Hybrid model, with 1,800 pounds of towing capacity, outshines the 2021 CR-V in terms of fuel consumption.
Yes, the Toyota RAV4 is offered as a hybrid and even a plug-in hybrid. You won’t find either in the CR-V lineup. With 219 horsepower, the RAV4 Hybrid is even more powerful and has a fuel consumption of 5.8 L/100 km in the city and 6.3 L/100 km on the highway. The RAV4 Prime, meanwhile, offers over 60 kilometres of range and 302 horsepower, which is very impressive for a vehicle this efficient.
