2026 RAV4 Towing Capacity and Performance

2026 RAV4 Towing Capacity and Performance

For Ontario shoppers who need to tow, the 2026 RAV4 lineup splits cleanly at the entry trim. The LE carries a towing rating half that of every other grade, and the one trim that ships with hitch hardware already attached is built specifically for that kind of use. Knowing how those lines fall saves time at the dealership.

Reading the Ratings: What the Numbers Actually Mean

The LE’s 1,750 lb (794 kg) rating covers a small utility trailer, a compact cargo run, or a lightweight fishing boat. It will not handle a mid-size boat, a loaded enclosed trailer, or most recreational setups that call for 3,500 lbs (1,588 kg). That gap is not about drivetrain: every 2026 RAV4 trim runs AWD. The difference is the trim’s rated capacity.

On the HEV side, the XLE is the entry point for 3,500 lbs. XLE, XSE, Woodland, and Limited all carry that rating. On the PHEV side, the SE AWD and XSE AWD are confirmed at 3,500 lbs (1,588 kg). The GR SPORT AWD’s towing figure is not confirmed in current product information.

Rated capacity assumes the vehicle is properly equipped for towing. On the HEV side, that means a tow hitch receiver and a 4-pin trailer wire harness connector. Only the Woodland includes both as standard. Every other HEV grade capable of 3,500 lbs will need those accessories added separately.

Which RAV4 Suits Your Towing Situation

The LE is right for very light, infrequent loads under 1,750 lbs (794 kg). If there is any chance your loads will grow, the XLE is a better starting point: the towing rating doubles and the fuel economy changes only marginally.

The XLE and XSE (HEV) are the entry point for 3,500 lb capacity on the hybrid side. Neither comes with a standard hitch, but both deliver efficient combined fuel economy: 5.7 L/100 km for the XLE and 5.8 L/100 km for the XSE. For buyers who tow on long highway hauls and want the lowest possible fuel cost per kilometre, these two HEV grades offer a strong balance.

The 2.5L 4-cylinder with Toyota’s 5th Generation hybrid system produces 236 hp and recharges through regenerative braking, so no plug is needed.

The Woodland (HEV) is the clearest pick for buyers who tow regularly. It arrives with the tow hitch and 4-pin harness already installed, plus a 120V/1,500W cargo power outlet for campsite or worksite use. Ground clearance measures 216 mm, the tallest in the HEV lineup, and all-terrain tires on 18-inch matt dark-grey alloy wheels add traction at a boat launch or gravel access point.

Combined fuel economy is 6.2 L/100 km, higher than the XLE or XSE, reflecting the added rolling resistance from the all-terrain tires and increased ride height. That is a modest trade-off for the ready-to-tow setup.

The Limited (HEV) also reaches 3,500 lbs (1,588 kg) and matches all other HEV grades with 1,070 L of cargo capacity behind the second row. It suits buyers who want the top HEV spec and plan to tow occasionally rather than every weekend. A dealer-installed hitch will still be needed.

The SE AWD and XSE AWD (PHEV) both reach 3,500 lbs (1,588 kg) and add a substantial electric driving range. The SE AWD is rated at 89 km of EV range; the XSE AWD at 85 km. For a buyer whose weekend towing trips are followed by daily commutes, driving most weekdays on electricity is a realistic outcome at those ranges.

The SE AWD uses a 7 kW onboard AC charger; the XSE AWD steps up to 11 kW for faster home charging. Toyota’s 6th Generation plug-in hybrid system powering both trims received the 2026 AJAC Best Green Innovation Award, recognizing real-world gains in range, efficiency, and charging speed over the previous generation.

The GR SPORT AWD (PHEV) is the lineup’s first GAZOO Racing RAV4 PHEV, producing 324 hp from its 2.5L 4-cylinder. It carries a 191 mm ground clearance and rides on 20-inch wheels. Its towing specification is not yet confirmed.

The 2026 RAV4 Trim That Fits Your Trailer

The 2026 RAV4 offers a clear towing path for Ontario buyers: any HEV grade above the LE or either confirmed PHEV grade reaches 3,500 lbs (1,588 kg). The Woodland is the only trim that ships ready to connect, making it the straightforward choice for regular towers. The SE AWD and XSE AWD suit the buyer who tows on weekends and wants electric range for the daily drive.
