The Engines of the Toyota Tundra in Detail

The new-for 2022 Toyota Tundra is available with two new state of the art powertrains that provide more power and torque than the previous models engines, as well as a lower fuel consumption.

The Twin Turbo V6

The base engine in the 2022 Tundra is a new 3.5-liter twin-turbocharged V6 unit which delivers 389 horsepower and 479 lb-ft of torque, in part due to the water-cooled intercooler which allows to use the full potential of the turbos without risking damaging them. Another solution to increase power and efficiency is the optimised exhaust valve shape and the cylinder head, which features a water jacket, in order to cool down the gases that enter the turbochargers. These output figures are higher than the V8 engine this powertrain replaces, despite the fuel consumption, which is much lower now.

The i-FORCE MAX

If you want the ultimate in technology and fuel efficiency for your Tundra, the new i-FORCE MAX powertrain is the one to chose. To achieve better performances and an event more impressive fuel economy, this powertrain adds and electric motor and a 288V battery to the regular engine and 10-speed automatic transmission combo. The battery is located under the rear seat, which means it doesn’t take up valuable interior space, as in some models. The electric motor helps push the peak outputs to 437 horsepower and 583 lb-ft of torque, while keeping the fuel consumption low by allowing the gasoline engine to turn off in many situations where it is not needed, at idle or when driving slowly. The selectable SPORT and SPORT+ drive modes make the most out of the instantaneous torque response of the electric motor in order to make driving more dynamic. These improvements to the driveline now allow the Tundra to tow up to 12,000 pounds and to drive off-road on surfaces that would not have been driveable before.
