Enthusiasts know all about the Toyota 86. Now, the 86 gets even quicker, even better handling, and more visual flair with the introduction of the 2022 Toyota GR 86.
Introduced earlier this month, the 2022 Toyota GR 86 gets a lot more power than the outgoing 86 thanks to a larger 2.4-litre four-cylinder engine that delivers 228 horsepower as opposed to 205. Torque also increases to 184 pound-feet as opposed to 156 and it will be available sooner at just 3,700 rpm. The performance upgrade will be further noticeable thanks to the 86’s impressive weight of just over 1,270 kg. Imagine that much power pushing so little weight.
The bump in power means that the GR 86 will get to 100 km/h a lot faster than the previous 86. Toyota says the GR 86 will need just 6.3 seconds to get to 100 km/h with the six-speed manual while the automatic drops to 6.8 seconds from 8.2 seconds.
If there was one area where the last 86 struggled, it was straight line accelerations. The new GR 86 will offer the same handling and performance characteristics, but it will be a lot quicker which is what any enthusiast longs for.
The GR 86 gets improved features inside, a new interior, and an impressive lineup of technology including Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Toyota Connected Services. The GR 86 also features 2+2 seating which makes it that much more convenient. Two versions will be offered, the GR 86 and GR 86 Premium. The latter gets unique styling cues such as an exclusive “duckbill” spoiler as well as Alcantara inserts on the seats. Moreover, the GR 86 Premium rides on 18-inch wheels with Michelin Pilot Sport 4 tires while the base GR 86 gets 17-inch wheels.
The GR 86 also gets upgraded safety features including adaptive cruise control, emergency braking up front, lane departure warning, and high beam assist on models with the automatic gearbox.
