The ways the Toyota Highlander improves in 2023

While the Toyota Highlander continues to be one of the leaders in the three-row crossover segment, there’s always room for improvement and for 2023, Toyota has done just that.

The big add for ’23 is that of a new turbocharged four-cylinder engine good for 265 horsepower and 310 pound-feet of torque, with the latter figure being higher than that of last year’s 3.6L V6, but using the same amount of fuel. Which, at less than 10L/100 km, is competitive for a three-row SUV. The engine comes as standard on the Highlander, and can tow up to 5,000 pounds.

All turbo Highlanders comes with AWD, with the system in the base LE and XLE models being able to transmit up to 50 per cent of torque to the rear wheels. On the XSE, Limited and Platinum models, there is torque vectoring and the ability to disconnect the driveline from the rear wheels for more efficient driving as well as manage the torque split between the two rear wheels.

On Limited and Platinum grades, audiophiles will appreciate the new 11-speaker JBL audio system as well as an all-new 12.3” infotainment display. The interface now runs faster, has more functionality and support for wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto and the wireless charge pad has been moved to a more convenient location, more easily accessible for front-seat passengers. It’s matched by a 12.3” digital gauge cluster, which replaces the 7” TFT display from the previous model and offers four modes: Casual, Tough, Smart and Sporty. The base LE model, meanwhile, now gets a 7” display as standard.

Styling additions for 2023 include new all-black 20” wheels for the XSE grade, and the Hybrid Bronze Edition with its unique Cement colour and bronze alloy wheels makes its return for 2023. The XSE model also gets specially-tuned suspension as well as a rear stabilizer bar and low-friction shock absorbers.

Additional ne convenience features include standard power folding mirrors on Limited and Platinum grades, which also get a hands-free liftgate as standard.
