Toyota has always been a leader in Canada when it comes to electrified vehicles, offering more hybrid and plug-in hybrid vehicles than any other automaker. Toyota was the first automaker to introduce a hybrid vehicle to the Canadian market, and today Toyota offers a wide range of electrified versions of its models including the very popular Toyota RAV4 Prime, Toyota RAV4 Hybrid, Toyota Prius and Prius Prime, and the Toyota Sienna and Toyota Venza which are offered exclusively with a Hybrid engine.
This extensive line up paired with Toyota's outstanding reputation for reliability, efficiency, safety, and dependability has allowed the automaker to once again outperform its competition in terms of sales for electrified vehicles. Toyota sold 55,886 electrified vehicles last year, an increase of 84.4% compared to 2020.
Highlights of Toyotas electrified vehicle sales last year included the Toyota Corolla Hybrid with 4,522 units sold, an increase of 82.9%. The Toyota Highlander Hybrid, with 5,271 units sold, saw its sales increase by 35.1%. Overall Toyota sales reached 225,215 units sold last year, an increase of 17.7% over 2020. The Toyota Highlander V6 with 14,614 units increased sales by 49.7%.
“On behalf of Toyota Canada, I’d like to thank our customers for their continued confidence and trust in Toyota and Lexus,” said Larry Hutchinson, President and CEO of Toyota Canada Inc. “I’d also like to thank our Canadian dealers and their dealership staff for their exceptional effort and focus on meeting the needs of our customers in 2021.”
Toyota should have no difficulty maintaining its impressive sales numbers for electrified vehicles next year, especially considering that the brand will be introducing multiple new models including the first ever fully-electric Toyota, the Toyota bZ4X, and the arrival of the hybrid Toyota Tundra.
