A plug-in hybrid sounds technical, but the idea behind it is simple. You charge a battery at home, drive on electricity for your everyday errands, and switch to a fuel-efficient hybrid engine when the trip gets longer. You get electric driving most days and never need to worry about running out of charge.
The 2027 Toyota Prius Plug-in Hybrid is built around exactly that idea. Here is a friendly, plain-language look at how its two modes work, how charging fits into your day and what you can expect from each grade.
Under the hood, the Prius Plug-in Hybrid pairs a 2.0 L 4-cylinder gas engine with electric motors and a 13.6 kWh lithium-ion battery. Together, they produce 220 system horsepower and drive the front wheels through an electronically controlled continuously variable transmission.
Think of it as two tools in one car. The battery and electric motors handle shorter trips on their own. The gas engine joins in when the battery runs low or when you need more power.
When the battery is charged, the Prius Plug-in Hybrid can drive on electricity alone. The SE grade can travel up to 72 km in electric-only driving. The XSE and XSE Premium can travel up to 64 km.
For many people, that covers a typical day of driving: the school run, a commute, a trip to the grocery store. Driving on electricity means no fuel used, a quiet cabin and smooth, instant response from the electric motors.
Toyota rates the SE at 1.8 Le/100 km combined and the XSE at 2.1 Le/100 km combined. Those figures reflect how little energy the car uses when it runs on the battery.
When the battery runs low, you do not need to stop and charge. The Prius Plug-in Hybrid switches into standard hybrid mode on its own, and the gas engine and electric motors work together like a regular Prius.
In hybrid mode, Toyota rates the SE at 4.7 L/100 km combined and the XSE grades at 5.0 L/100 km combined. With a 40 L fuel tank, the XSE Premium has a total driving range of up to 866 km.
That means a weekend road trip works the same as in any gas car. You fill up and keep going.
Charging is as simple as plugging in your phone. New for 2027, every Prius Plug-in Hybrid comes with a dual-voltage charging cable for both Level 1 and Level 2 charging.
Level 1 uses a regular household outlet. It is slower, but it works well overnight.
Level 2 uses a 240V outlet. On a Level 2 charger, the battery can be fully recharged in as little as four hours.
A simple routine works for most owners. Plug in when you get home, and the car is ready the next morning with a full electric range.
Every Prius includes a drive mode select system, so you can tailor the powertrain to your preferences and the road conditions. Standard features on all grades include dual-zone automatic climate control and Toyota Multimedia with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. A five-year trial of Safety Connect, Service Connect and Remote Connect is included, along with a three-month trial of Drive Connect.
Every Prius Plug-in Hybrid also comes with Toyota Safety Sense 3.0, the Toyota Star Safety System, eight airbags and Blind Spot Monitor with Safe Exit Assist.
