The 2026 Toyota 4Runner is built to go where the pavement ends. Every grade comes with four-wheel drive, and several add off-road tools like Crawl Control and a locking rear differential. That capability makes the 4Runner a strong partner on snowy roads.
Still, even the toughest SUV depends on its tires once the temperature drops. Winter tires give the 4Runner the grip it needs to stop and steer on cold, icy roads. This guide covers everything you need for a smooth tire swap, from finding your size to understanding your 4WD system.
Four-wheel drive helps the 4Runner pull away and climb on slippery surfaces. Your tires handle the rest: braking, turning and holding the road in a corner.
All-season and all-terrain tires use rubber that stiffens in the cold. Winter tires stay flexible in low temperatures and use deep tread with many small slits, called sipes, to bite into snow and ice. A common Canadian guideline is to switch once daily temperatures settle around 7°C or below.
Look for the three-peak mountain snowflake symbol on the sidewall. It shows the tire passes a recognized test for severe snow.
The 2026 4Runner uses several wheel and tire sizes depending on the grade. You can find yours on the tire sidewall or on the placard inside the driver’s door jamb.

Many owners mount winter tires on a dedicated set of wheels. It speeds up each changeover and protects the main wheels from road salt. Some drivers with 20-inch wheels choose a smaller winter wheel size, and your service advisor can confirm which sizes fit your grade.
Every 2026 4Runner comes with four-wheel drive, but the system varies by grade:
Your owner’s manual explains when to engage each mode. Our service team is also happy to go over it with you at your tire appointment.
Off-road-focused grades add more traction tools. The TRD Off Road Premium models, gas and hybrid, include a locking rear differential, Multi-Terrain Select, Crawl Control and Downhill Assist Control. The Hybrid TRD Pro and Hybrid Trailhunter also include a locking rear differential.
A tire swap is a good time to look at your spare. The gas TRD Off Road Premium, Hybrid Platinum, Hybrid TRD Pro and Hybrid Trailhunter grades include a full-size spare tire. Make sure it holds the right pressure and shows no damage before winter arrives.
Work through these steps before the first storm:
Book early. Service bays fill quickly once the first snow falls.
Measure tread depth. Worn winter tires lose much of their snow grip.
Set the pressure. Use the pressure listed on your door jamb placard and check it monthly, since cold air lowers tire pressure.
Inspect for damage. Look for cuts, bulges or uneven wear.
Test your winter helpers. Every 4Runner comes with a windshield wiper de-icer, a rear window defroster and a rear camera washer.
The 4Runner keeps you comfortable once the cold sets in. A heated leather-wrapped steering wheel is standard on most grades, and the Hybrid TRD Pro gets a TRD heated steering wheel. Heated front seats are standard across the lineup, while the Hybrid Platinum grades upgrade to heated front and second-row seats.
Gas 4Runner models use a 2.4 L turbocharged 4-cylinder that makes 278 hp and up to 317 lb-ft of torque, with a towing rating of 6,000 lbs (2,722 kg). The i-FORCE MAX hybrid uses the same 2.4 L turbocharged 4-cylinder with an electric motor for 326 hp and 465 lb-ft of torque, and it is rated to tow 5,800 lbs (2,631 kg).
